In 2024, researchers at the University of Birmingham published peer-reviewed findings in Environment International showing that flame-retardant chemicals used in plastic additives can leach into sweat and be absorbed through skin — more so on hydrated, sweaty skin than dry skin.

Using 3D human skin models, researchers measured how much flame-retardant chemical transferred from lab-created microplastic particles into skin over a 24-hour exposure window — with sweatier skin absorbing more.

It establishes the mechanism — that chemicals in plastic can transfer through sweaty skin — rather than proving a specific outcome from wearing any one garment. We think that mechanism is reason enough to choose fabric with nothing to leach in the first place.
