You've probably seen "GOTS Certified" on a clothing tag before. Maybe you skimmed past it. Maybe you assumed it just meant "organic" and moved on. Here's what it actually means — and why we only put that label on a few of our pieces, not all of them.

Why GOTS Exists

Before certifications like this existed, "organic" was just a word brands could put on a tag with no one checking. GOTS was created to close that gap — to give organic cotton a standard that's actually verified, not just claimed, from the farm all the way to the finished garment.

在这类认证出现之前,"有机"只是品牌随意印在标签上的一个词,没有人去查证。GOTS的存在就是为了填补这个空白——让有机棉从种植到成品,都有一套真正经过验证的标准,而不只是嘴上说说。

What GOTS Actually Requires

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) isn't a marketing term — it's a certification with two tiers. Products labeled "organic" must contain a minimum of 95% certified organic fibers, while "made with organic" only requires 70%. The organic fibers themselves must be grown without synthetic pesticides, GMOs, or synthetic fertilizers.

But GOTS goes further than the raw fiber. It also strictly controls what happens after the cotton is grown — the certification prohibits heavy metals, azo dyes that release carcinogenic amines, formaldehyde, and other toxic chemicals throughout the manufacturing process. That's actually the part most people miss: a shirt can say "100% cotton" and still be finished with chemicals that irritate skin. GOTS closes that gap.

To maintain certification, all cotton must be tested for GMO and pesticide residues before ginning, and every certified facility undergoes annual on-site inspections — plus a functional wastewater treatment system is mandatory for any wet-processing involved. It's not a one-time badge. It's ongoing accountability, all the way from farm to finished garment.

为了维持认证资格,所有棉花在轧棉前都必须检测基因改造成分和农药残留,每个认证工厂每年都要接受现场审核——如果涉及湿处理工序,还必须配备符合规定的废水处理系统。这不是一次性拿到就了事的标章,而是从田地到成品,持续不断的把关。

Why I Started Caring About This

For years I wore brands like CK — nylon, polyester, the kind that looks sharp and feels cold to the touch. Looked good.
